CURRENT POPULATION ESTIMATES BY ADMINISTRATIVE DISTRICT, 2025


POPULATION IN MALAYSIA, 2025

INTRODUCTION

The current population estimates for administrative districts present the population estimates in Malaysia for 2024 and 2025. The annual current population estimates are based on the Population and Housing Census Malaysia, 2020. The population estimates use cohort-component method which comprise of births, deaths and migration. These estimates used the bottom-up approach. The population is estimated according to single age, ethnic group and sex at district level. The current population estimates data for 2025 will be finalised upon receiving the latest components data.

 

MAIN FINDINGS

1. The district of Petaling, Selangor registered the highest population in 2025 at 2.4 million, followed by Johor Bahru, Johor (1.8 million) and Ulu Langat,Selangor (1.5 million).

2. Females outnumbered males in 13 districts which comprised Muallim, Perak with sex ratio of 92 males for every 100 females, followed by Bachok, Kelantan (94); Samarahan, Sarawak (94); Song, Sarawak (96); Kubang Pasu, Kedah (97); Saratok, Sarawak (97); Julau, Sarawak (98); Pasir Puteh, Kelantan (98); Tumpat, Kelantan (98); Kanowit, Sarawak (99); Kota Setar, Kedah (99); Machang, Kelantan (99) and Maradong, Sarawak (99). 

3. The highest median age in 2025 was recorded in Lubok Antu at   38.8 years, followed by Saratok (38.1 years) and Kabong (35.8 years) in Sarawak.

4. 10 districts emerged as ageing districts with its population aged 65 years and over reached 7.0 per cent in 2025, namely Seremban, Negeri Sembilan; Jerantut, Pahang; Kluang, Johor; Kuantan, Pahang; Bachok, Kelantan; Pontian, Johor; Subis, Sarawak; Alor Gajah, Melaka; Keningau, Sabah and Seberang Perai Selatan, Pulau Pinang.  

5. The highest total dependency ratio in 2025 was recorded in Kelantan and Sarawak, namely in Tumpat, Kelantan (64.1), Song, Sarawak (61.7), Pasir Puteh, Kelantan (60.6) and Gua Musang, Kelantan (59.8).

6. Petaling, Selangor has the highest population density with 4,858 persons per square kilometre, followed by Timur Laut, Pulau Pinang (4,748 persons) and Seberang Perai Tengah, Pulau Pinang (1,895 persons).
