The number of live births for the second quarter of 2023 increased 13.0 per cent from 93,799 births in the second quarter of 2022 to 105,961 births. Males babies outnumbered females with 54,747 births as compared to 51,214 births for females.

 

Selangor recorded the highest live births with 20,477 births (19.3%) while Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan recorded the lowest (357 births: 0.3%). Mothers aged 30-39 years recorded the highest live births in the second quarter 2023 which was 53,679 (50.7%), followed by the age of 20-29 years (42.3%), 40 years and over (5.2%) and age less than 20 years (1.8%).

 

A total of 50,239 deaths was recorded in the second quarter 2023, an increase of 0.7 per cent as compared to the second quarter 2022 (49,893 deaths). The number of deaths recorded for males were 28,495 while females 21,744 deaths.

 

Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths with 7,765 deaths (15.5%) while Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya was the lowest with 73 deaths (0.1%). In terms of age, the number of deaths for aged 60 years and over recorded the highest number of deaths at 35,415 deaths (70.5%), followed by aged 41-59 years (19.6%), aged 15-40 years (7.6%) and aged 0-14 years (2.3%).

 

Malaysia’s population in the second quarter 2023 was estimated at 33.4 million, increased by 2.1 per cent as compared to second quarter 2022 (32.7 million). Males population increased from 17.0 million to 17.5 million as compared to the second quarter 2022 while females increased from 15.7 million to 15.9 million in the same period. The overall sex ratio of population was 110 males per 100 females while sex ratio for Citizens was 103 males per 100 females.
