MALAYSIA EXTERNAL TRADE STATISTICS BY STATE
Seven States Registered a Double Digit
Growth for Exports and Imports in 2022
- In 2022, Malaysia’s total trade amounted to RM2.8 trillion with exports of RM1.6 trillion and imports worth RM1.3 trillion. Seven (7) states registered a double digit growth for exports and imports in 2022 were W.P. Labuan, Sarawak, Kedah, Johor, Perlis, Pulau Pinang and Sabah.
- Malaysia’s exports in 2022 registered an increase of 25.0 per cent to RM1.6 trillion compared to 2021. Higher exports were recorded in most states such as Pulau Pinang (+RM107.7 billion, +30.3%), Johor (+RM84.7 billion, +35.2%), Sarawak (+RM45.4 billion, +52.7%), Selangor (+RM22.4 billion, +8.8%), Kedah (+RM14.4 billion, +36.1%), Sabah (+RM8.8 billion, +27.0%), W.P. Labuan (+RM8.2 billion, +75.3%), W.P. Kuala Lumpur (+RM2.9 billion, +4.5%), Pahang (+RM2.9 billion, +8.9%), Negeri Sembilan (+RM2.2 billion, +9.4%), Melaka (+RM1.2 billion, +4.1%), Kelantan (+RM1.2 billion, +42.1%), Perlis (+RM392.1 million, +34.2%) and Terengganu (+RM325.7 million, +1.9%). However, exports decreased in Perak by RM2.2 billion or 5.6 per cent to RM37.1 billion.
- On the same note, Malaysia’s imports in 2022 registered a double-digit growth of 31.3 per cent or RM308.8 billion as compared to the previous year, recording a new highest import value of RM1.3 trillion. Expansion in imports was led by higher imports by all states namely Johor (+RM96.3 billion, +49.7%), Pulau Pinang (+RM61.1 billion, +26.4%), Selangor (+RM56.0 billion, +20.2%), Kedah (+RM16.2 billion, +28.0%), Melaka (+RM15.6 billion, +61.4%), W.P. Kuala Lumpur (+RM15.5 billion, +21.0%), Negeri Sembilan (+RM12.9 billion, +41.2%), Sarawak (+RM10.8 billion, +46.0%), Pahang (+RM7.3 billion, +47.7%), Perak (+RM4.8 billion, +14.9%), Sabah (+RM2.1 billion, +25.8%), W.P. Labuan (+RM1.4 billion, +71.2%), Terengganu (+RM1.1 billion, +21.9%), Perlis (+RM425.0 million, +50.9%) and Kelantan (+RM191.0 million, +9.9%).
- Pulau Pinang remained as the top exporter with a share of 29.9 per cent, followed by Johor (21.0%) and Selangor (17.8%).
- Selangor continued to dominate Malaysia’s imports with a share of 25.7 per cent, followed by Pulau Pinang (22.6%) and Johor (22.4%).
