Exports

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, in February 2019, the export unit value index recorded a marginal decrease of 0.04% to 114.0 points which was mainly attributed to a  decrease  in  the  index  of  machinery &  transport equipmen t (-0.4%),  chemicals  (-0.4%) and manufactured goods (-0.3%). Meanwhile, the export volume index fell 22.0% to 109.8 points which was led by the index of inedible crude materials (-34.8%), machinery & transport equipment (-23.4%) and mineral fuels (-22.0%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index dropped 13.9% to 123.2 points.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index expanded 1.4% while the export volume index declined 6.6%.

 

Imports

In February 2019, the import unit value index grew 0.2% to 116.4 points as compared to the previous month which was mainly led by a rise in the index of inedible crude materials (+2.3%) followed by mineral fuels (+1.9%) and manufactured goods (+1.3%). In contrast, the import volume index dropped 25.0% to 108.5 points which was mainly attributed to the decrease in the index of manufactured goods (-34.1%), inedible crude materials (-32.5%) and chemicals (-26.1%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in February 2019 declined 15.6% to 122.1 points.

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value index rose 0.8% while the import volume index shrank 10.1%.

 

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade posted a decline of 0.3% to 98.0 points when compared with January 2019. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade expanded 0.6% from 97.4 points.
