MALAYSIA EXTERNAL TRADE INDICES JANUARY 2015

MONTH-ON-MONTH COMPARISON:

Exports

In January 2015, Malaysia’s export value recorded a decline of 6.0% to RM63.6 billion where the export volume index decreased 6.1% to 105.5 points. This was led by animal & vegetable oils & fats (-19.6%), chemicals (-9.9%) and manufactured goods (-6.5%).

Similarly, the export unit value index decreased marginally by 0.1% to 136.3 points. This was mainly attributed to mineral fuels (-1.4%) and manufactured goods (-0.3%).

Seasonally adjusted figure

In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 3.9% to 104.7 points.

 

Imports

In January 2015, Malaysia’s total import value registered a reduction of 6.6% to RM54.6 billion where the import volume index dropped 6.5% to 118.7 points. This was mainly attributed to mineral fuels (-31.5%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (-11.6%) and machinery & transport equipment (-3.5%).

Meanwhile, the import unit value index decreased 0.5% to 129.3 points which was led by mineral fuels (-4.0%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.3%).

In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in January 2015 decreased 5.0% to 117.6 points.

 

YEAR-ON-YEAR COMPARISON

Exports

Malaysia’s export value decreased 0.6% from RM64.0 billion where the export unit value index decreased 1.9% from 139.0 points, year-on-year basis. The decrease was mainly due to mineral fuels (-15.9%), inedible crude materials (-9.0%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-4.1%).

In contrast, the export volume index registered an increase of 1.4% from 104.1 points which was led by inedible crude materials (+10.6%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+8.5%) and chemicals (+7.2%).

 

Imports

In January 2015, the import value recorded a decline of 5.3% from RM57.6 billion where the import volume index decreased 3.9% from 123.5 points. The decrease was mainly due to mineral fuels (-42.4%), inedible crude materials (-6.5%) and food (-2.4%).

Meanwhile, the import unit value index dropped 1.4% from 131.2 points. This was attributed to mineral fuels (-18.6%) and inedible crude materials (-0.9%).

 

TERMS OF TRADE

In January 2015, Malaysia’s terms of trade increased marginally by 0.4% to 105.4 points when compared with December 2014. The increase was mainly registered in mineral fuels (+2.6%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.6%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.4%).

On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade registered a reduction of 0.5% from 105.9 points. The reduction was mainly recorded in inedible crude materials (-8.2%), followed by animal & vegetable oils & fats (-1.5%) and manufactured goods (-0.9%).
