MALAYSIA EXTERNAL TRADE INDICES MARCH 2015

MONTH-ON-MONTH COMPARISON:

Exports 

In March 2015, Malaysia’s export value recorded an increase of 25.0% to RM66.5 billion where the export volume index rose 24.6% to 109.8 points. The rise was mainly contributed by machinery & transport equipment (+30.9%), manufactured goods (+29.5%) and chemicals (+26.6%).

However, the export unit value index recorded only a small increase of 0.4% to 136.9 points. The increase was attributed to mineral fuels (+2.4%), followed by manufactured goods (+0.6%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.1%).

 

 

 

Seasonally adjusted figure

In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index increased 9.5% to 105.9 points.

Imports

In March 2015, Malaysia’s total import value registered an increase of 20.6% to RM58.6 billion where the import volume index rose 20.3% to 127.0 points. This was led by chemicals (+26.0%), machinery & transport equipment (+22.7%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+21.9%).

Similarly, the import unit value index increased marginally by 0.4% to 129.9 points. This was mainly attributed to mineral fuels (+3.0%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.3%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.1%).

In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in March 2015 decreased 0.04% to 123.8 points.

 

YEAR-ON-YEAR COMPARISON:

Exports

Malaysia’s export value increased 2.3% from RM65.0 billion where the export volume index registered an increase of 4.2% from 105.3 points which was led by machinery & transport equipment (+11.9%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+10.0%) and chemicals (+4.7%).

Meanwhile, the export unit value index decreased 1.9% from 139.5 points. The decrease was mainly due to mineral fuels (-16.8%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-9.6%).

 

Imports

In March 2015, the import value posted an increase of 5.8% from RM55.4 billion where the import volume index rose 7.0% from 118.7 points. The increase was mainly due to chemicals (+12.5%), manufactured goods (+9.9%) and machinery & transport equipment (+7.1%).

Meanwhile, the import unit value index decreased 1.1% from 131.3 points. This was contributed by mineral fuels (-17.7%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-4.5%).

 

TERMS OF TRADE

In March 2015, Malaysia’s terms of trade increased by 0.1% to 105.4 points when compared to the previous month. The increase was mainly registered in chemicals (+0.8%) and manufactured goods (+0.6%).

On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade decreased 0.8% from 106.2 points. The decline was mainly recorded in inedible crude materials (-8.7%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-5.4%).
