Exports
On a-month-on-month basis, in September 2016, the export unit value index increased 1.6% to 105.2 points. This was mainly attributed to mineral fuels (+7.0%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (+5.1%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.6%). Meanwhile the export volume index decreased 0.9% to 121.5 points. This was led by animal & vegetable oils & fats (-11.7%), manufactured goods (-2.9%) and chemicals (-1.4%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 2.0%.
When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and export volume index decreased 2.1% and 1.1% respectively.
Imports
In September 2016, the import unit value index registered an increase of 0.7% to 109.2 points which was attributed to mineral fuels (+1.9%), foods (+1.0%) and machinery and transport equipment (+0.5%). Meanwhile, the import volume index increased 1.7% to 125.8 points. This increase was mainly led by mineral fuels (+28.5%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index expanded 1.9%.
On a-year-on-year basis, the import unit value index recorded an increase of 1.6% while the import volume index decreased 1.6%.
Terms of trade
In September 2016, Malaysia’s terms of trade recorded an increase of 0.9% to 96.3 points when compared with the preceding month, while a reduction of 3.6% was recorded year-on-year.
