Environmental protection expenditure performance for the year 2017 registered an annual growth rate of 0.8 per cent to RM2.59 billion as compared to 2015. Operating expenditure was the highest contributor of 72.3 per cent meanwhile 27.7 per cent  for capital expenditure.

Expenditure for environmental media (air, surface water, groundwater and noise) was the largest contributor with RM1,659.7 million or 64.0 per cent. This was followed by waste management expenditure with RM789.0 million (30.4%) and other environmental protection expenditure RM71.7 million (2.8%)

The manufacturing sector dominated the overall expenditure on environmental protection expenditure in 2017 which was RM1,734.9 million with 66.9 percent contribution, followed by mining & quarrying of RM313.2 million (12.1%) and services sector RM275.1 million (10.6%).
